Support Mounting for Grocery Workers In Potential Washington-Baltimore Area Strike

 
     
 

On March 30, workers will vote on a contract proposal from Giant and Safeway, covering the wages and benefits of 28,000 grocery store workers at 325 stores throughout the Washington-Baltimore area.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 400 and 27 are printing picket signs, selecting strike captains, setting up strike funds and establishing food banks to prepare for a labor dispute.

Safeway CEO and President Steve Burd, who is under increasing pressure from some financial analysts questioning his competency, is leading the attack on workers wages and benefits in the Washington-Baltimore area. Burd attempted to effectively eliminate health care benefits for 70,000 Southern California grocery workers resulting in the nation's longest grocery strike.
